With Robot Pepper to the RoboCup German Open

Team from the Cluster of Excellence CITEC to participate in the competition in Magdeburg with a new humanoid robot

The team from the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) at Bielefeld University has qualified to participate with its robots in the German RoboCup competition, to be held in Magdeburg, Germany. From 5 until 7 May, the humanoid robot Pepper will support the Bielefeld team. Pepper’s strength lies in social interaction: the robot can recognize the most important human emotions, and also explore and react directly to its environment. Beyond these capabilities, Pepper’s human-like appearance makes interaction between human and machine more natural.

ToBi will compete against seven teams in the RoboCup@Home league (household service). If everything goes well, the Bielefeld team will also again compete in the upcoming world championship, which will be held in Japan in July 2017.

The aim of the RoboCup competition is to help speed up the development of autonomous robots. Applications from the household service league can, for instance, be used to develop service robots for use in domestic work. The key point here is that the teams release information to the public on how they programmed their robots after the competition is over, which allows others to benefit from their progress. The competition is divided into different main leagues. In addition to the RoboCup@Home household service league, teams compete against each other in soccer, logistics, rescue, and work-related scenarios for the title of world champion.

This year, the Bielefeld team (ToBi) consists of a total of 13 team members, and CITEC’s Dr. Sven Wachsmuth, Sebastian Meyer zu Borgsen and Florian Lier serve as the team leaders.
