What do gender and technology have to do with each other? After all, doesn’t technology offer solutions for all types of tasks from which both women and men equally benefit? Or does gender, as a social category, influence technology design – and vice versa? In the present publication “Gender-Effekte: Wie Frauen die Technik von morgen gestalten” (“Gender Effects: How Women Are Designing the Technology of the Future”), the authors pursue these questions from various perspectives.
How technology became “masculine,” how norms, as a productive element, have an impact on technology design, and which different approaches can systematically unveil problematic types of gendering in the design of technical objects – the articles in this collection propose a multitude of ideas on these topics.
The goal of this new publication is to enhance the visibility of women’s expertise in the development and formation of technology, and at the same time to succeed in contributing to gender-sensitive design of applications, products, and digital work environments. The publication is based on the lecture series of the same name, which was held by Bielefeld University’s Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC) in cooperation with the Kompetenzzentrum Technik-Diversity-Chancengleichheit e. V. (Competence Center Technology-Diversity-Equal Chances).
