CITEC Congratulates David Fleer on Successful Dissertation

David Fleer successfully completed his dissertation. On 27 August 2018, David Fleer successfully completed his doctoral dissertation. He is a member of the Computer Engineering group (led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ralf Möller), which is part of Bielefeld University’s Faculty of Technology and the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC).

David Fleer’s dissertation was titled “Vision-Based Autonomous Robotic Floor Cleaning in Domestic Environments.” Members of his examining committee included Professor Dr.-Ing. Ralf Möller (Computer Engineering, Bielefeld University), Dr. Wolfgang Stürzl (Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, German Aerospace Center), Professor Dr. Mario Botsch (Computer Graphics and Geometry Processing, Bielefeld University) and Dr. Thies Pfeiffer (CITEC Central Labs, Bielefeld University).

For his doctoral research, David Fleer worked on autonomous cleaning robots that scan their surroundings using a panoramic camera. Specifically, he researched and improved the basic system components for the control, localization, and cleaning strategy of the robots. In addition to this, the computer scientist also worked on making cleaning robots better able to interact with their users. His work emphasizes in particular the processes that are suitable for real household cleaning robots that have low computing capacity.

We at CITEC offer our congratulations to David Fleer on his successful dissertation.

In his doctoral research project, David Fleer worked on an improved system for cleaning robots that have low computing capacity.
