Award for CITEC doctoral student

The Association to Support International Students in Bielefeld (ViSiB) awarded two international students on 23 January for outstanding achievements and engagement. One of the students awarded is Salvatore Annunziata, who has just completed his doctoral studies in the Biomechatronics group at CITEC.

From 2008 to 2013 Salvatore Annunziata worked at the research group led by Professor Dr. Axel Schneider at Bielefeld University. The focus of his doctoral studies was on researching new concepts for controlling robots. In particular, Annunziata concentrated on making the electrical impulses in the joints of robot limbs behave as if biological muscles powered them. His approach not only plays an important role in biorobotics, it also could prove to be an important field of application for the construction of prosthetics.

In addition to his studies, he also founded with other students the Cultural Association of Italian Doctoral Students (ACID) in November 2011 as a registered student association of Bielefeld University. The university group wishes to build bridges across cultures, and welcomes all those with an interest in Italy.

With his exceptional social engagement, Annunziata contributes to promoting understanding between cultures, helps Italian students get a foothold in their studies at Bielefeld University and familiarises them with the region of Ostwestfalen and what it has to offer. In addition, Annunziata advised and supported other students on the Brother-Sister mentoring programme at Bielefeld University. He was unable to attend the award ceremony as he is currently working abroad.

The Association to Support International Students in Bielefeld (ViSiB) has been active for over 25 years in integrating international students at Bielefeld University and the University of Applied Sciences in Bielefeld. Many projects have been realised over the years, from allocating host families to a programme of leisure activities and bicycle rental service. The society also supports international guests in the search for accommodation and jobs and helps in emergency situations. The acting head of the Association is the chancellor of Bielefeld University, who at the present time is Hans-Jürgen Simm.
