The Cognitive Interaction Technology Center of Excellence (CITEC) does not just promote postgraduates. It also endeavours to provide direct support to Bachelor and Master students.
Every year, at the beginning of the winter semester, CITEC awards six one-year scholarships to students attending Bachelor and Master study courses at the faculties participating in CITEC: Biology, Linguistics and Literary Studies, Physics, Psychology and Sport Science, and Technology.
Through close and early ties to research during their studies, CITEC scholarship holders gain an unique opportunity to get to know research "from the inside" and acquire experience in an interdisciplinary research institute. Each of these students is assigned one of the scientists working at CITEC as her or his personal mentor. Scholarship holders are also encouraged to participate in CITEC events and activities (e.g., lectures, workshops, conferences, open days) and make their own creative contributions to them.
Excerpts from the final reports of former scholarship holders:
- "I gained a lot of new impressions thanks to my CITEC scholarship. Not just the financial support, but also the opportunity to find out (...) which research teams are involved and what projects they are working on. International exchange was also very important. Much of the communication is in English, and I really liked this open atmosphere " (One of the first round of scholarship holders).
- "The CITEC Lecture Series, which I often went to, and the Open day both offer a good chance to look at the problems being studied from another perspective and to see the interdisciplinary connections (...) We were also asked to give short experience reports at the BINGO-Tag (die Berufsoffensive für INGenieur/-innen in OstWestfalenLippe) [a regional career campaign for engineers] and the pea*nuts-Herbsthochschule [an introductory week at the university for female upper secondary school students]. This gave us the chance to tell small groups of school students about our studies and CITEC. In all, the scholarship enabled me to gather a lot of experiences, particularly regarding my plans for a scientific career after completing my studies" (Another of the first round of scholarship holders).
